Yesterday,IILM University, Gurugram hosted a visit for Fashion Design, Psychology and BBA students to Respun, Panipat, Haryana headed by Professor Nirbhay Rana for providing an epiphany regarding the textile recycling process that goes behind the scenes in the fashion industry. Many wouldn’t know but there are two types of textile waste! Pre-consumer which has been discarded or rejected by the manufacturers and Post-consumer is what we as “conscious consumer” discard and throw after wearing or when it doesn’t fit anymore. Post-consumer textile waste is hard to recycle as there are materials which take long to recycle and decompose as well only 10% of the waste gets recycled in India and rest gets dumped as the whole recycling process has 6 steps which a item has to go through and post-consumer items pose a problem as majority of the items are created with a blended composition which is harder to recycle. It is being advised and said that single/mono composed (either made with natural fibres or in one colour) items will hold more value when recycled and upscaled. Respun had taken the initiative almost a decade back to the do the needful and rigorous and provide us with the fibre and yarn that has been recycled and is now being upscaled into wonderful products. I as a fashion student and enthusiast thank Respun for hosting us and enlightening us about the textile recycling and industrial challenges that are in process and yet to be tackled.
